Your Dream Rides

At the 2016 holiday party, we asked you what your dream ride would be, and what you would be willing to do to see the ride get off the ground. At the 2017 potluck, we discussed some of the more popular ride ideas: Kripalu in western Mass, Prince Edward Island, and Tuscany. Patty has done some research and made the following information available to all of us:

  1. Kripalu (western Mass.)
  2. Prince Edward Island
  3. Tuscany

February 2017 Board Meeting Canceled

Hi all,
Given the travel conditions today, I say we CANCEL our board meeting for this evening.
Here’s what we were slated to cover tonight:
  • Winter banquet update and game plan
  • 2017 Calendar
  • Membership Software Update
  • Jersey update
The Winter banquet is the only time-sensitive item, and I think we can cover that via email.
Thanks and stay safe,

Annual Winter Banquet/Potluck 2017

Banquet Fun

Here’s a great way to beat the winter doldrums:  come to the CBBC annual winter banquet on Saturday, February 25th, 2017 at the First Parish Congregational Church in Gorham.   We’ll be following our usual potluck format with beverages provided by the club.

  • Gather at 5:00
  • Eat at 6:00
  • Program to follow dinner

I’ll also share here a summary of the “Dream Ride”  cards that many of you filled out at our Holiday Party in December.  Patty asked you to describe your “dream ride,” along with your ideas about how it should be organized, and how you might be willing to help.   The responses were great – you collectively have a lot of great ideas!

Several themes emerged:

  1. Europe theme, especially Tuscany and the Netherlands:  13
  2. Downeast Maine / PEI / Nova Scotia:  9
  3. Western Mass/Berkshires/Kripalu yoga: 2
  4. Other: 8 (no two the same)

We thought it would be nice to build on these themes at the winter banquet.  We’ll have some signs on the tables, and invite you to share dinner with others who share your interest.  In other words, we’ll have a Europe/Tuscany/Netherlands table, a Downeast/PEI/Nova Scotia table, and probably an “other” table.  Of course you can (and will) talk about whatever you want, but if you’re seated with like-minded cyclists, who knows what plans may emerge?

Following dinner, Andy has graciously offered to open our program with an overview of the RideWithGPS mapping software that many of us the club use to plan routes.   Following Andy’s presentation, let’s just say we have some SURPRISES in store!

See you on the 25th!

2017 Dues Increase

At the 2016 annual club meeting, we voted to increase our dues from the current rate of $15/individual $25/family to $25/individual $40/family. This rate will apply to new memberships and renewals starting 1/1/2017.

If your membership is current, you are all set for the balance of your 12 months. The new rate only applies next time you renew after 1/1 and will cover you for another 12 months from that point.

The rationale for the increase is that at the old rate, our dues didn’t cover our expenses, and the dues had not been raised within any one’s memory – perhaps since the inception of the club! Given the convoluted process for changing the dues (see below), we also also thought we would “future proof” and raise the dues to a level that will sustain the club for some years to come.

See you on the road in 2017!

Annual Meeting and Proposed Dues Increase

Our Annual Club Meeting will be held on Monday, October 10th, 2016 at the Yarmouth Community House at 6:00 PM.

Pizza and beverages will be provided, and besides a lively agenda, we will have a guest speaker, so be sure to RSVP and mark your calendars!

Club members will have received a ballot for online voting in advance. If you prefer to vote in person, you may do so at the meeting.

Below is an earlier email Dave sent outlining a proposal to raise our club dues.  We will be voting on this proposal at the Annual Meeting.  Details and rationale are outlined below.

Thank you for being a member of the Casco Bay Bicycle Club!

Dear fellow cyclists, and members of Casco Bay Bicycle Club.

For our last two meetings, the board has discussed the possibility of increasing our club dues.  At the August meeting, we voted to initiate the process of increasing our dues from the current rate of $15/individual $25/family to $25/individual $40/family.  The proposed effective date of the change is to be 1/1/2017.

The rationale for the increase is that our current rate, our dues don’t cover our expenses, and the dues have not been raised within any one’s memory – perhaps since the inception of the club!  Given the convoluted process for changing the dues (see below), we also also thought we would “future proof” and raise the dues to a level that will sustain the club for some years to come.  That was our rationale for raising to $25, rather than $20.

Raising the dues requires an amendment to our club by-laws, with a vote at a meeting open to all members.  All club members are welcome to all our board meetings, but we thought the best time for this vote would be our annual all-club meeting, traditionally held in October or November.   When the board meets next Monday, we’ll set the date for the all-club meeting.  Please consider this email notification that the issue of raising the dues will be on the agenda.

Here is pertinent excerpt from the Club’s by-laws (posted on our website):

6.2 Amount of dues. Dues shall be determined by a majority vote of all members of the Club present at a regular meeting providing that at least fifteen (15) days within written notice is given to the membership, such notice to include the proposed change in dues and date proposed change in due is to be voted. Unless, or until changed, the dues shall be as set forth on EXHIBIT 1 to these By-Laws. All subsequent changes in dues shall be certified by the Club President or secretary and attached to these By-Laws as an exhibit.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the annual meeting, and hopefully on the road before that!

Respectfully submitted,

Dave Collins,
President, Casco Bay Bicycle Club

The Bailey Island Ride Is Back – August 20, 2016

The Bailey Island ride is still on for Saturday, August 20th, 2016. This replaces the regular Saturday ride out of West Falmouth.

Due to several requests we will do the ride in reverse of past years. We will ride to Bailey Island, have lunch, then take the ferry to Portland. The total distance is about 50 miles. The ferry leaves at 2 PM and arrives in Portland at 3:45 PM. This is an all day affair.

We will start at the Northgate Shopping Center in the parking lot to the right of Shaws (as you face Shaws) at 8:00 AM for those who live nearby. We will ride (about 10 miles) to the Hannaford shopping center on route 1 in Yarmouth where we will meet up with those who live in the Yarmouth area. We will meet in the
far left side of the parking lot as you face Hannaford’s (usual starting location for the Wednesday evening weekly ride). We will leave Yarmouth for Bailey Island (about 30 miles) at 9:00 AM. We should arrive by noon for lunch, then leave on the 2:00 PM ferry.

Cost for the ferry, one way plus bike, is $24.50. Since we pay on the boat they only accept cash or check.

After the ferry ride people return home individually if they like, or in groups back to either Northgate Shopping Center or Yarmouth.

Ride sheets will be available at each starting point.

Please let me know if you are going and where you would like to start.

If the weather is bad I will notify any cancellation via e-mail and Facebook.

There is no rain date.

No West Falmouth Ride This Saturday, 7/23/16

There will not be a ride out of West Falmouth on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016. In place of this ride is the York Beaches ride…see the club website, newsletter and e-mails from Ron for more information. Consider joining the club for this ride…it is a very nice ride to Portsmouth. I’ve done it a few times and have always enjoyed it very much!

The West Falmouth ride will resume Saturday, July 30th, 2016.

4th of July Bayley’s Ice Cream Ride

Steve will host a ride out of West Falmouth on the 4th of July 2016. Starting at 9 AM at the Hannaford parking lot across from exit 53 of the ME turnpike. Plan on around 40 miles with a stop at Bayley’s Ice Cream on Pine Pt Road (they open at 11 AM so we will take our time going out there).
