First Parish Church, 1 Church St, Gorham, ME. Joan Uraneck, professor of art history at MECA, will speak and show slides of her 1000 mile ride across Poland. This will be Last Day to order new club jerseys (high visibility colors) at lowest price for members, no money down!

It’s time for the 2011 Holiday Party, Thursday, December 15, 2011. Happy hour 5:30, Dinner at 6:30. Club members will be receiving invitations in the mail, or you can download yours below.

2011 CBBC Holiday Party Invitation

At the holiday party we will be trying to gauge support for special rides for 2012, so please be thinking about the options Patty has listed below and whether you would be interested in one or more of them!

1) Prince Edward Island ride with Merrymeeting Wheelers. This ride will be happening July 13-23, 2012, with more details to follow.

2) Janice: New York, Finger lakes, in August. Janice has the Q- ride sheets from the MS ride and has stayed at a great
hotel. Questions are… How long of a trip. How far from Maine, How do we get there, would it be day trips or loops.??

3) Ken: Kripalu, Bike,Yoga & Concerts. Lenox, MA. Ken & Ann just came back from a trip there. Both Joyce and I have been at Kripalu, loved it. One can stay at Kripalu or camp (which I did that last year). Kripalu is a Yoga center, has Fabulous food, lots of Yoga and other seminars, a big lake, and near the Berkshire Mts. Also Tanglewood music center is practically next to it. It’s about 4.5 hour drive. (Ken & Ann biked there). We were thinking a long weekend. Questions are: Would folks be interested in a multi-bike-music-yoga mini vacation. Camp, or Kripalu or look outside of Lenox for cheaper hotels ??.

4) Bon Ton Roulet: July 22-28. An organized ride, Carolyn Foley has done it. Fully supported, check out the website. http://bontonroulet.com/

5) Years ago the Club joined Cycle America and we participated in the Montana Ride. Questions: Cost and a week long?

6) Cruise, Bike & Eat: Sept. Joyce and myself have done organized Norwegian cruise trips and would love to do the Boston to Quebec or back as the town are very bike friendly. Portland being one of the ports. Questions: Need commitment, cost and planning.

7) Gary Davis: Has offered his pick up truck for 5 or so riders to travel somewhere (over the rainbow…) Where????

2011 Annual Meeting

The 2011 annual meeting will be on October 20, 2011. Meetings take place at MMC’s Dana Center. The board meeting, which is open to club members, is at 6:00 PM in Classroom 5. Then at 7:00 PM, we will move to the larger Classroom 2 for the annual meeting, featuring food and a slideshow entitled “Biking and What-Not in Sweden” by Barbara and Ron.

Fryeburg Frolic Century – September 24, 2011

The Fryeburg Frolic Century attempts to be a kinder, gentler century even though it passes through the hills of western Maine, up to the edge of the White Mountains. It starts at the University of Southern Maine, Gorham Campus, off Rt. 114. The route to Fryeburg winds through pine woods and small villages; past lakes and around the Burnt Meadow Mountains. With an Indian Summer day, the Fryeburg food stop, near a beach on a quiet bend of the Saco River, may include some swimming. The return ride follows the Saco River, even though you only get to glimpse it now and then. It includes the back road from Hiram to Cornish – a classic stretch of understated Maine beauty.

2011 Tour du Beaches and Club Picnic

It’s time for the annual Club picnic! – September 18, 2011 (Rain date: September 25, 2011.) Crescent Beach State Park, Rt 77, Cape Elizabeth. Group site: 3/10 of a mile from park entrance, take right to far end of parking lot. Left onto the first parking row closest to the beach.

Time: Meet at Group Site 9:00 AM. The ride will start from the Site around 9:30 AM. There are several distance options: 16, 20 and 35 Miles.

Cost: CBBC members free entrance to to park, picnic and ride. Bring your friends! Non-members: $6.00 suggested donation to cover food and park fee ($4.50).

Food: There are 5 grills at the group site. Club will provide burgers, hotdogs, vegetarian burgers, potato salad, chips, soft drinks and cookies. Cake for September birthdays !! Feel free to bring your favorite dish if you want.

Directions: Go over the Casco Bay Bridge towards South Portland. Follow signs to Rt. 77. Take a right at the Yield Sign (Pizza Joint) this is Rt. 77. Follow that road straight all the way, passing the Cape Elizabeth fire station, Town Hall, Pond Cove Shopping Center, High School, then the ice cream stand, big hotel and then on your left is Crescent Beach State Park.

2011 White Mountain Century Canceled

Dear Riders,

The 2011 White Mountain Century, scheduled for Saturday, September 17, has been canceled due to damage to roads and bridges on the route caused by Hurricane Irene, which has closed the Kanc and parts of Route 302 to traffic. While crews are working to make necessary repairs, there are no assurances that those repairs would be complete prior to the date of the century. Because of the extent of the damage, rerouting the course would also be difficult and there are additional concerns of putting riders onto roads with increased traffic due to the detours.

NOTE: For those who have pre-registered, please know that we will not cash those checks and will shred them instead.

Please help us spread the word! If you know of others planning to ride, who may not be on this distribution list, please pass along this information. Gary, Mary and I, along with the Casco Bay Bicycle Club, hope to see you next year. We’re disappointed to cancel a ride that we know many people look forward to every year, but clearly the safety of our riders is our number one concern.

Bailey Island Ride Saturday, August 13, 2011

Hi All,

Just a reminder that this Saturday, August 13, 2011 (rain date Sunday August 14) the Saturday Yarmouth ride will become the Bailey Island ride. The ride totals about 45 miles. There are two options for beginning the ride. Either leave at 8:00 AM (an hour earlier than usual!) from the Yarmouth Hannaford and bike to the Casco Bay Lines Ferry Terminal in Portland, or just meet at the ferry terminal. We’ll get on the 10:00 AM ferry to Bailey Island, arriving around Noon. Then we’ll bicycle back to Yarmouth or Portland, depending on where you started. There will be a brief stop at a convenience store in the Brunswick area for snacks, drinks, water, etc. Detailed ride sheets will be available on the day of the ride.

Cost will be $17 for the one way ferry ride plus $6.50 for your bicycle, a total of $23.50. FMI, contact Bill Jose at contact by email .

York Beach Ride & BBQ – July 30, 2011

(Rain date: July 31, 2011.) A mostly flat 38 mile ride along York Beach around the Nubble and lighthouse down to Kittery, with a loop through old Portsmouth and back. Very scenic!
